After a long-awaited conclusion to a 20-year-old cold case, Phoenix Police have arrested a man in the murder of a teenager from the Valley, marking an end to the decades-long mystery of her death. On the anniversary of the murder, 37-year-old Sergio Francisco Reyes was apprehended, and charged with the killing of 15-year-old Elena Lasswell in 2004. As per a statement received by FOX 10 Phoenix, the arrest was effected in Phoenix, following Reyes' extradition from Mexico.
Originally deemed a cold case despite vigorous attempts at resolution, including appeals to Silent Witness and the community, authorities eventually cracked the case through DNA evidence linking Reyes to the crime. Made on July 10, the announcement by Phoenix Police, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix highlighted the culmination of relentless investigative work and advancements in DNA technology that, in 2012, produced a profile consistent with Reyes' implication in the crime. By 2013, the DNA evidence was processed and, after a subsequent indictment by the Maricopa County Grand Jury in 2014, Reyes was identified as the suspect.
Reyes, presented with allegations of multiple violent felonies, including sexual assault and 1st-degree murder, now faces the long arm of the law within the confines of Maricopa County Jail. The development was met with emotions from Lasswell's family, as reflected in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix where Lasswell’s aunt, Katie Tourville, expressed relief and gratitude toward the Phoenix PD. Tourville called the arrest "awesome" and, while discussing the impact of the murder on the family, pondered the life Elena could have led, touching on the lost possibilities of marriage and career which now will forever remain unanswered questions.
The sentiment of renewed hope was also expressed by Steve Lasswell, Elena's father, during an interview with 12News. Believing the arrest provides some form of closure, Lasswell conveyed that, over the years, hope in detectives was never lost, and the family's primary wish was to prevent the perpetrator from harming others. Steve Lasswell expressed profound gratitude toward the efforts of the Phoenix Police Department, stating, “I’d really sincerely like to thank the Phoenix Police Department and everyone who was involved in this for hanging in there for this long and having success."
Even with time, law enforcement's commitment to bringing justice provides a cautious yet pivotal step toward healing for those left behind. Reyes' day in court will be the next chapter in this long narrative, as legal proceedings are set to advance in the coming months.
