The American Red Cross is actively seeking volunteers in the Austin and Georgetown areas to assist with disaster relief efforts amid concerns about the intensification of Hurricane Beryl. Volunteer recruitment events, designed to swiftly enlist and prepare additional assistance, are scheduled for this weekend at Montopolis Recreation Center and Georgetown First United Methodist Church, as reported by KXAN.
A pressing call has been issued for Mass Care Volunteers, who are crucial to managing day-to-day activities in times of crisis, along with licensed healthcare professionals to bolster Disaster Health or Mental Health Services. The Red Cross highlights that such volunteers form 90% of their workforce and are essential in providing shelter, hot meals, and support to families impacted by disasters across the nation. This information emerges following a release by ARC obtained by KXAN.
With approximately 350 volunteers currently en route to a disaster relief base in San Antonio for a two-week deployment to contend with Beryl, the Red Cross emphasizes that additional help is still urgently needed. “The hope here is to sign up as many volunteers as can to help us get ahead of future disasters, but not only help with Hurricane Beryl right now,” Delis Kirppelz, the Communications Director for the American Red Cross, told KVUE.
Emphasizing the human element, the Red Cross has pinpointed a significant need for mental health specialists to aid those affected by disasters on their recovery journey. “When somebody faces a disaster, it’s probably one of the worst days of their life,” said Kirppelz, according to a KVUE interview. A heartening perspective is offered by longtime volunteer, Ken Armstrong, who finds his work deeply rewarding: “One of the most exciting things to me is to come up to someone that’s been in probably the worst day of their life, and say, ‘Hey, we’re from the American Red Cross, and we’re here to help you,” he said in a statement to KVUE.
For individuals who cannot commit to a two-week deployment, the Red Cross offers additional ways to serve, details of which are available on their website. As for those able to commit, free training courses at the American Red Cross Center in Austin are scheduled to ensure volunteers are well-prepared to aid in shelter operations and other critical areas of support during Beryl's aftermath.
