Residents in Apache Junction are gearing up for some promising developments in the affordable housing sector. According to recent announcements, the city’s Development Services Department is planning to launch a program offering free design plans for affordable housing. The plans, expected to be available mid-September, aim to aid in reducing costs and streamlining the construction process for those looking to build their own homes.
The initiative, modeled after a similar successful program from Yavapai County, enables the construction of modest-sized homes by providing pre-approved design and construction plans that cut down on review times, permit fees, and design costs for the homeowners. The sizes for these homes vary from 900 to 1,800 square feet. Homeowners are estimated to save roughly $2,000 in permit fees, along with the hefty price of hiring an architect, which averages between $10,000 to $20,000 per project, as per the city's announcement.
The program is exclusively for those who reside in Apache Junction and are planning to construct their homes within the city's perimeter. The intention of offering these plans is to make new affordable options more accessible for homeowners, a move that the City of Apache Junction has been able to introduce at minimal costs through collaboration with Yavapai County.
Menus of the initial home designs will be presented to the City Council shortly before the launch of the program, offering residents three different floor and elevation plans to choose from. The details on how to utilize these plans will be published on an official webpage, where interested parties can also sign up for email updates to stay abreast of the latest developments regarding the project launch.
