Last month, Arizona took a proactive approach to infectious disease management with the 11th annual Arizona Infectious Disease Training and Exercise, commonly known as AZID2024. Held at the end of June, the event saw over 400 public health professionals from a diverse range of organizations come together for a crucial skill and knowledge exchange. The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), brings in expertise from across the board, including local jurisdictions, the CDC, and academia.

Getting down to the gritty details, the conference opened with an exercise designed to simulate a response to a large-scale botulism outbreak. Some 150 public health partners churned through strategies, working to get their arms around the coordination such a nightmare scenario would demand, as per the ADHS. But it wasn't just about crisis management. Over the two-day spread, presentations, and sessions covered the gamut of infectious threats, from foodborne illnesses and zoonotic diseases to respiratory conditions and the persistent challenge of healthcare-associated infections.

Importantly, the AZID2024 event didn't skip over the critical issues of health equity and public health surveillance, as detailed by the ADHS. Participants dug into sessions aimed at improving understanding of these areas, along with Tuberculosis outbreak control and antimicrobial stewardship. The fine art of interviews—so vital in tracing and containing infectious diseases—also got its due with dedicated sessions on best practices.
