Investigations by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are underway following a fire that decimated the Revival Temple Ministries in South Memphis. While the local fire department originally cited an electrical malfunction in the AC unit as the cause, the sudden involvement of the ATF has prompted questions, according to Action News 5.
According to reports from the Memphis Fire Department, the fire erupted just after midnight on Tuesday, with the flames proving destructive enough to cause an estimated $1.1 million in damage. However, some sources have questioned the initial ruling of the fire's origin. An owner of the building was among the first to voice concerns, which seems to have at least partially compelled further scrutiny from federal authorities. As stated by a spokesperson for the ATF, as per WREG, the agency is actively seeking additional information, including video footage and past news reports concerning the property.
While the local fire officials and ATF spokespeople have not officially diverged on their interpretations of the blaze, the deepened investigation suggests complexities beyond what was originally reported. The Memphis Fire Department reached the scene approximately at 12:30 a.m., facing heavy smoke and flames billowing from the church building, as stated in their initial communications.
The fire appears to have originated from the top center of the sanctuary, directly implicating the air conditioning unit. "Nearly $750,000 worth of damage was done to the building and $350,000 worth of content was lost in the blaze," detailed the Memphis Fire Department, as reported by FOX13. Revival Temple Ministries, having stood at the E.H. Crump and Camilla Street intersection for approximately three years, now faces the future with uncertainty as they fully wait to understand what transpired on that devastating July night.
