The Atlanta Police Department has identified the victim as Earnest Byrd Jr., whose life was abruptly ended in June when Joseph Grier allegedly took control of the bus on which Byrd was a passenger. The Atlanta Police Department's most recent update, published on their website, details the charges against Grier: Murder, 14 counts of Aggravated Assault, 14 counts of Kidnapping, Hijacking a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
According to the Atlanta PD's timeline, the harrowing events began to unfold at approximately 4:35 p.m. on June 11, 2024, when officers were called to 45 Ivan Allan Jr. Blvd. NE after reports of gunfire and, a potential hostage scenario. Responding to the chaotic scene, officers confronted a bus careening away from the location prompting a chase that spanned various areas and enlisted the aid of multiple agencies. Grier's run from the law came to an end near 5107 Hugh Howell Rd. in Stone Mountain, where authorities were able to apprehend him without further violent incident.
Inside the commandeered vehicle, officers discovered Byrd suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to hospital care, Byrd's injuries proved fatal. As for the other passengers who found themselves in the midst of this crime, no additional injuries were reported.
