An Atlanta man, Sincere Rush, has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder of Marcus Bradford, following a confrontation outside a rooming house in DeKalb County. According to a report released by the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office, Rush, 22, was found guilty of several charges including Malice Murder and Felony Murder. DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Tangela Barrie handed down the decision on Thursday, June 13, 2024, mandating a life sentence plus an additional five years suspended.
On the night of November 28, 2022, DeKalb County Police responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Clifton Church Road. They discovered Bradford with a gunshot wound. The subsequent investigation revealed Rush had fatally shot Bradford following a brief argument. The altercation, captured on surveillance footage, showed that Rush brought a firearm to the carport where Bradford sat eating pizza with his girlfriend. Despite Rush's claim to have shot in self-defense, evidence indicated otherwise; Bradford was unarmed during the incident.
Bradford's girlfriend, a tenant at the rooming house, recounted to the police that they were merely eating in their car when Rush confronted them complaining about noise. "Y’all know I sleep right here, right?" Rush supposedly stated, as reported by the homicide investigation team. When Bradford exited the car to speak to Rush, he was met with lethal force. Senior Assistant District Attorney Tauri Thomas, with substantial support from her team, prosecuted the case, which was primarily handled by the Homicide and Gangs Unit.
Rush had attempted to argue self-defense by calling 911 and stating that Bradford approached him aggressively. The recorded video from the scene contradicted this narrative, displaying no aggressive move from Bradford prior to being shot. The video did prove to be a persuasive component in the trial, leading to the severe verdict delivered by the authorities. With the case winding to a close, the DA's office emphasized the role of the DeKalb County Police Department in swiftly responding and assembling the necessary evidence to secure the conviction.
Relying on the collaborative work of Assistant District Attorney Emily Donkervoet, District Attorney Investigator Christopher Hollowood, and Supervising Victim Advocate Ikwo Nyong, as well as detectives from DeKalb County Police Department, the prosecution illuminated the details of the encounter, ultimately convincing the jury of Rush's malicious intent. This case has concluded with the sentencing of Rush, closing a chapter for the family of Marcus Bradford while haunting questions about violence and justice in the community likely remain.
