In a press briefing, the Austin Police Department disclosed that they had responded to a check welfare call around 5:30 p.m. after reports surfaced of a body located near Rainey and Cummings Street. The deceased man was discovered with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead by 5:45 p.m., as reported by KXAN.

While early reports suggested they were consistent with blunt force trauma, the APD's homicide unit later clarified to KXAN that the injuries appeared to not be related to such trauma and are likely to have been self-inflicted. Officer Austin Zarling stated the man's death is not being seen as a homicide, but police are continuing to thoroughly investigate the circumstances. The involvement of the Austin-Travis County EMS and the Austin Fire Department was also confirmed.
Contrary to the initial impressions of violence, APD officials have stated that they do not suspect foul play at this stage.
