In anticipation of the Independence Day celebrations, the Austin Police Department is set to strictly enforce a city ordinance that temporarily bans certain watercraft on Lake Austin. According to the City of Austin, starting sunset on July 3, personal watercraft like jet skis, wet bikes, and motorized surfboards will not be permitted on the waters until sunrise on July 5. This ban aims to ensure the safety of the large number of visitors expected to use the lake and surrounding parks for holiday festivities.
The ordinance, identified as 8-5-81, is a recurring measure that doesn't just apply to the Independence Day period; it also restricts the usage of these personal watercraft during Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, as per the City of Austin. The intention is to minimally disrupt the revelry and to allow safe enjoyment of the lake's natural offerings. Devices that don’t require a motor, such as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, are still welcome, as are watercraft where you conventionally sit or stand inside the vessel.
Lake patrols will be on the lookout to ensure compliance with both the Texas Water Safety Act and the City of Austin's boating laws and ordinances throughout the weekend. People using waterways have been urged by the police to practice safe boating and are reminded to dial 9-1-1 for any emergencies or to report reckless operation of boats.
