Barnes & Noble’s expansion into Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood has taken a slight detour as the company now plans to open its doors not in July, but instead on September 4, as confirmed by Block Club Chicago. Citing the need for preservation of the historic architectural elements of the Noel State Bank Building at 1601 N. Milwaukee Ave., Director of Store Planning Simon Vodopianoff told Block Club Chicago, “We are sorry to disappoint our customers with the delayed opening of the Wicker Park store, We are working with the city to ensure the correct preservation of the iconic historic elements of the building and look forward to opening our doors on September 4.”
Previously occupied by a Walgreens branch until its closure in early 2023, the historical bank building, which has stood since 1919 will soon house multiple levels of bookshelves containing books, toys, games, and other items for sale, according to Block Club Chicago. The establishment will not feature a cafe, a decision reached during the construction phase after discovering structural challenges that would have further delayed the opening, as reported by Hoodline Chicago.
This setback has not curbed the bookstore chain's growth, which continues, opening a Lincoln Park location earlier this year and signaling further expansion in the Chicago area with planned openings in Oswego and Northbrook, as noted by Hoodline Chicago. Each new store is a marker of Barnes & Noble's period of tremendous growth, indicating a strong belief in the brick-and-mortar business model for book retail.
Local reactions have been mixed, with some residents eager to see the space repurposed, while independent bookstore owners express concern over potential impacts on their businesses, such as the nearby Volumes Bookcafe. As summer progresses, all eyes will be on the September opening to gauge the new store's influence on the neighborhood's cultural and commercial landscape, as residents and local businesses adapt to this latest commercial development.
