Bay Area residents may have noticed a slight reprieve from the recent heat as temperatures dipped this morning. According to the NWS Bay Area, the 5 AM readings across many local stations were several degrees cooler than the day prior, signaling a welcomed change in the area's weather pattern. The cooler temperatures, which are most pronounced below 1000 feet, come alongside forecasts predicting a downturn in temperature that is set to last into next week.

The National Weather Service San Francisco, California, has issued its latest Area Forecast Discussion, indicating that an upper-level low is ushering in more significant cooling beginning today. "Temperatures are expected to be significantly cooler today as an upper level low moves inland and allows for upper level troughing to deepen over the Western US", the Area Forecast Discussion noted. The forecast suggests below-average temperatures persist through the middle of the following week, with inland highs today primarily in the 80s. In contrast, coastal areas can expect highs in the 60s to 70s.

According to the forecast discussion, the marine layer is currently compressed to around 1000 feet, which will limit inland stratus coverage and keep the fog closer to the coast. Cold onshore winds are expected to gust between 20-35 mph during the afternoon and evening. As the troughing pattern intensifies, the forecast anticipates an increase in moisture transport inland and a more widespread stratus, including some potential for drizzle along the coast over the weekend.

Looking ahead, "Temperatures continue to cool Saturday and Sunday with widespread 70s to 80s expected inland and 60s to 70s expected closer to the coast", the NWS detailed. There's a slight potential for drizzle due to decent low-level moisture interacting with upslope ascent conditions. The marine conditions are forecasted to remain breezy through the period, although wave heights and winds are expected to diminish by Sunday into next week. Despite this cooling period, the report hints at a return to warmer weather by the first week of August. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated on the latest weather conditions and prepare accordingly for the shifts in temperature and marine conditions.
