A recent update to a tragic incident on S. Nellis Boulevard has been reported by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. On the night of Tuesday, July 2, a three-way collision involving a 1997 Dodge Dakota, a 2010 Chrysler 300C, and a bicyclist resulted in severe injuries and has now taken a turn for the worse. The bicyclist caught in the crash has died, succumbing to injuries on July 5.
According to the initial investigation, the bicyclist, identified as 59-year-old David Brooks, was riding against traffic on the southbound lanes of S. Nellis Boulevard. After crossing the raised center median, Brooks entered the path of the northbound Dodge Dakota, driven by Anthony Wayne Tate, aged 44. The bike was struck from behind, and Brooks was ejected onto the southbound lanes, where he was then hit by the Chrysler, operated by 22-year-old Leonardo Manuel Montanez, with passenger Alexa Stevens, 20, accompanying him. Investigators note that Tate showed signs of impairment by alcohol or drugs, at the scene and has been arrested and charged with DUI-related offenses.
Emergency services transported Brooks to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center's Trauma Unit in a critical state, where he fought for his life. Tragically, he passed away after several days. A representative from the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner confirmed the death of the victim to the Collision Investigation Section of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The fatality is the 85th traffic-related death in the jurisdiction this year.
The drivers of the Dodge and Chrysler sustained no injuries, and while Montanez displayed no signs of impairment, Tate is currently dealing with the ramifications of his alleged state during the accident. The collision remains under active investigation, as officials seek to unravel the full extent of the circumstances leading up to this fatal event.
