An early morning collision on Okeechobee Road in Fort Pierce resulted in the death of a bicycle rider, involving an off-duty St. Lucie County Sheriff's deputy. The incident unfolded around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, according to CBS12. Responding to the scene in the 23,000 block of Okeechobee Road were the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office (SLCSO).
The details surrounding the collision are still unfolding, but the deputy, having ended their shift, has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy of the sheriff's office in such incidents. Found dead at the scene, the name of the bicyclist had not been released pending notification of relatives.
Sheriff Keith Pearson conveyed the gravity of the situation, stating, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the bicyclist’s family and friends as well as our deputy,” as found in a statement on WPBF. The Florida Highway Patrol is now leading the ongoing investigation into the cause and circumstances of the fatal collision.
