A fire erupted early Monday morning at Good Shepherd Church in Downers Grove, a western suburb of Chicago, causing substantial damage to the church and resulting in widespread power outages affecting approximately 130,000 customers, officials reported. The fire, which was first noticed around 6:15 a.m., followed an incident where a car struck a utility pole, leading to a transformer fire that spread to the church on 63rd Street, according to CBS Chicago.
The blaze specifically ravaged the roof area above the attached school at Good Shepherd Lutheran Academy, but no injuries were reported. Downers Grove firefighters, who extinguished the fire with assistance from neighboring departments, concentrated their efforts on the portion of the structure housing classrooms. Jonathan Vanwyngaarden, a parent of a child who attends the preschool there, relayed the severity of the scene to CBS Chicago. "It's heartbreaking. I mean, the first thing we saw was the roof caved in right where his classroom was. The whole roof was just caved in over it," he said, "I know his teacher said pretty much everything in her classroom is gone."
Power was swiftly reinstated to most customers, with ComEd stating that by 9 a.m., only about 200 remained without electricity.
The cause beyond the initial vehicle collision leading to the consumed transformer is still under investigation, Fire Chief Scott Spinazola mentioned to ABC7 Chicago. that firefighters "did make an aggressive interior attack to attempt to extinguish the fire," Spinazola said.
