In an effort to foster community ties and provide a safe, engaging activity for families, the Boston Police Department has launched its seasonal Summer Flashlight Walks, starting with an event in South Boston's Mary Ellen McCormack Housing Development.
The initiative, which took place earlier this week, saw officers mingling with local residents and their children, sharing treats and shining light on community policing efforts; as part of the festivities, kids walked away with BPD-branded flashlights and hats, not to mention a scoop of ice cream to cool down in the summer heat provided by the BPD Ice Cream Truck, an effort made sweeter by contributions from HP Hood, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department's website.
"It was a great night getting to know the families who live in the neighborhood!" was the sentiment echoed from the event, reflecting a larger purpose behind these walks—not just to ensure a visible law enforcement presence, but to build trust and rapport among residents.
If you missed the inaugural flashlight walk, there's another chance to participate: the next event is scheduled for Thursday, July 11th at 7 pm at the Archdale Community Center in Roslindale, neighbors and officers alike will gather for what promises to be another evening of community building through this unique, light-filled stroll.
