Homestead police made an arrest following a burglary at SmartStop Self Storage, after about $20,000 worth of sneakers were reported stolen from the facility located at 1235 NE 12th Ave; the suspect's attempt to flee the crime scene was unusual to say the least. According to WSVN, Tyvarius Tygwyan Straoudmattison was caught by police officers inside the unit after he had climbed through the roof and tried to make an escape across adjoining unit ceilings, which resulted in him falling through one of them.
During the initial police response to the burglary on July 3, Straoudmattison's tactics were reported by a witness as being far from stealthy, with the suspect later apprehended in an almost comical fashion, dangling from the storage facility's roof which captured the attention of bystanders, one of whom labeled the suspect as “What an idiot!” as recounted by Local 10. In the aftermath of the first burglary report officers returned to the scene the next day a sequence of events unfolded that led to Straoudmattison attempting to outmaneuver police until his ill-conceived escape route left him exposed and inevitably led to his capture.
The storage facility staff confirmed that Straoudmattison had rented one of the units, which he accessed using his personal passcode; during the arrest, two additional storage unit owners reported burglaries, suggesting a series of thefts at the facility. Straoudmattison, now in custody, is facing multiple charges including burglary to an unoccupied structure, grand theft, and resisting an officer without violence, as detailed in the reports from WSVN.
Following his arrest, Miami-Dade corrections records, indicate that Straoudmattison was held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and was charged with one count of second-degree grand theft, two counts of third-degree grand theft, three counts of burglary of an unoccupied structure, and one count of resisting an officer without violence; the victim of the theft pointed out, "The way he left my unit, he was actually coming back for more," according to Local 10.
