As the trial into the 2022 hookah lounge shooting commences, Jonathan Tijerina stands charged with capital murder in the fatal incident that claimed the life of Takhai Michael. According to KSAT, the trial began this Tuesday, with testimonies painting a grim picture of the events leading up to Michael's death outside the Blow Hookah Lounge.
Witnesses recounted, in stark detail, how Tijerina was allegedly involved in a robbery that turned deadly. However, crucial to the defense's stance, Kelly Pittl, Tijerina's attorney, vehemently has argued that his client, while present, did "not start anything or take part in the shooting." Meanwhile, security footage and eyewitness accounts provided conflicting narratives of the chaos that ensued that night. "You are never going to see a gun in Jonathan's hand," Pittl assured the jury, as reported by KSAT.
Further complicating the case is the testimonies from Alejandra Garcia and Haven Lopez, as detailed in a report by Express News. Garcia, Michael's girlfriend at the time of the incident, recalled a gun being pointed "inches away" from her face before the attack escalated, ultimately leading to Michael's shooting. Lopez's account corroborated the notion of Tijerina's involvement, alleging he held a gun and demanded she exit the car during the robbery.
Tijerina's family members have come forth to offer a different perspective of the accused. In court, Lucia Tijerina, his mother, painted her son as an empathic individual who unintentionally got caught up "with the wrong crowd." She insisted on the character of her son, stating, "People make mistakes, teenagers make mistakes," and that she believes "he didn't do" the crime he's facing a life sentence for, as she told Express News, clutching rosary beads outside the courtroom.
The case continues to unfold in the 290th Criminal District Court under Judge Jennifer Pena. As testimonies are slated to resume, the outcome of Tijerina's trial could significantly shift the narrative surrounding the tragic events of May 2022.
