Drug smuggling efforts took a hit this week as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Tecate Port of Entry intercepted a significant amount of narcotics. A 33-year-old man attempting to cross into the United States from Mexico was caught with 133.11 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in his truck, a discovery made possible by a K-9 unit's alert during a routine inspection.

The incident occurred last Wednesday just before the evening rush, around 5:58 p.m. when CBP officers were conducting their standard checks on incoming vehicles. The driver, behind the wheel of a 2020 truck, was pulled aside after the canine signaled the possible presence of drugs. In the secondary inspection area, officers used advanced scanning technology, which indicated irregularities within the vehicle's constructed compartments.

A deeper dive unveiled 35 packages of the illegal substance stashed away in a toolbox and canopy bag. A CBP news release confirmed the packages tested positive for methamphetamine. "We commend the exceptional diligence and expertise of our CBP Canine Teams for their pivotal role in detecting and aiding in the seizure of 133 pounds of methamphetamine,” said Rosa Hernandez, Port Director for the Area Port of Otay Mesa.

Following the seizure, the driver was detained and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further inquiry, while CBP seized the narcotics and vehicle. This operation is a segment of the broader Operation Apollo, an initiative targeting the smuggling of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs across the southern border of California and, more recently, extended to Arizona. Hernandez stressed the importance of such operations via the CBP news release, "This significant interception underscores the vital importance of our ongoing efforts under Operation Apollo X to disrupt criminal supply networks and keep narcotics out of our nation’s communities."
