A Chapel Hill community is grappling with shock and grief following an early morning shooting that has left one man dead. According to CBS 17, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Ashley Forest Road, leading to the tragic death of Adam Abdur-Rahman, 37.
The Chapel Hill Police Department, engaging in an investigation that spanned throughout the day, arrested 45-year-old Mario Thompson. Charged with murder, Thompson was observed by CBS 17 reporters being held in custody before he was transported to Orange County jail.
In the hours following the shooting, a resident reported hearing six gunshots, as detailed by WRAL News. This same resident, processing the events that had unfolded through the night, only realized the following morning that a bullet had penetrated their apartment, leaving a stark reminder of the violence that occurred mere steps from their dwelling.
Moving to swiftly address the situation, Chapel Hill Police confirmed that Thompson, who resides at the Tyler Creek housing community, faces charges including first degree murder and discharging a weapon into occupied property. Getting transported following his apprehension, Thompson's custody was transferred to the Orange County Detention Center where he is being held without bond, and his court appearance was expected on the following Thursday at 2 p.m., as per information obtained from Chapelboro.
The Chapel Hill Police Department has appealed to the community for anyone with information to come forward, encouraging individuals to contact authorities directly or via the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers hotline, details of which were shared by Chapelboro. As this case unfolds, the impact on those who knew Abdur-Rahman and the broader Chapel Hill community continues to resonate deeply.
