According to the latest update from NWS Charlotte, today will see a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m., but before that, citizens are in for a scorcher with temperatures rising near 99 degrees and heat index values as high as 104.
The sultry conditions are expected to persist, with a particularly hot Tuesday on the horizon, heat index values could soar up to a blazing 108 degrees. Evening provides slight reprieve with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms predicted mainly before 8 p.m. The nighttime will bring partly cloudy skies and a low hovering around 76 degrees small comfort against the daytime's intense heat.
Wednesday will remain hot with a near 96-degree high and a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The rest of the evening will most likely encounter similar patterns. On Thursday, the chance of precipitation ramps up to 80 percent, and the thermometer is expected to dip slightly to a high near 92 degrees.
The National Weather Service cautions that such conditions are more than just mere discomfort they can pose real health risks. Heat index values approach 102 to 105 degrees for many locations east of the NC mountains. Limit time outdoors and take breaks in the shade with plenty of water, warns the NWS. For the days following, a similar pattern of oppressive heat followed by evening storms is predicted, with the area's residents urged to take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses by limiting outdoor activities and staying hydrated.
