Last Thursday's celebrations in Charlotte's Uptown district saw a collaborative effort by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department that resulted in multiple arrests but no major incidents. A strategic operations plan was implemented to maintain order during the public fireworks display. According to a statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, twelve individuals, including two adults and ten juveniles, were detained for offenses ranging from drug possession to carrying concealed weapons.
Amongst the arrests, an adult named Kendric Patton was charged with Resist/Delay/Obstruct and Simple Drug Possession. The other, Maurice Brown, was facing an outstanding arrest order and received additional charges including Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Resist/Delay/Obstruct, and Possession of Pyrotechnics. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department highlighted the seizure of a firearm, ammunition and drugs which included more than 12 pounds of marijuana. As well as, three boxes of fireworks were confiscated during the event operations which spanned from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Thursday evening.
To prevent potential criminal activities, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department implemented proactive measures through its Juvenile Apprehension and Diversion Empowerment (JADE) Unit. The unit conducted 32 home visits to prior offenders before the celebrations. This preemptive strategy seemed to have an effect, as only one juvenile from this group re-offended on Thursday.
Critical to the effort's success was the cooperation with several city departments and agencies, including the Charlotte Fire Department, MEDIC, CATS, CDOT, and Mecklenburg County Emergency Management. These groups were instrumental in executing the operations from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department command center, which was rigorously active till the end of the event. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department expressed its gratitude towards these partners for their contribution in maintaining public safety during one of the most significant national holiday events of the year.
