Chicago has been hammered by severe weather for the second consecutive night, with reports of up to 10 tornadoes touching down in the area on Monday, causing widespread damage and leaving one woman dead. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the storms have led to significant power outages, with around 153,000 ComEd customers left without electricity as of Tuesday morning. ComEd anticipates that power will be restored to most by Wednesday afternoon, but cautions some may have to wait until Friday.
Flooded roadways and transportation delays have further complicated the aftermath for Chicagoans. As reported by CBS News Chicago, multiple tornadoes were confirmed, including one at O'Hare International Airport which prompted a ground stop at both O'Hare and Midway airports.
The storm's reach extended to transportation, with Metra reporting delays on Tuesday morning after wire problems led to setbacks of 15-20 minutes on the Metra Electric line. On the ground, Interstate 55 near Arsenal Road faced vehicular entanglement with wires, leading to road closures and injuries, "is not expected to open for another 12-24 hours" state police indicated, in a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
