A 10-year-old boy was struck and killed by an unidentified driver in Katy, Texas, while riding his bicycle during a fireworks show on the night of the Fourth of July. The hit-and-run incident took place at the intersection of Windy Stone Drive, and Concord Green Drive, authorities said.
First responders from the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the Cy-Fair Fire Department attempted lifesaving measures on the scene. The child was then airlifted to a trauma center where, according to Houston Chronicle, he succumbed to his injuries. The driver, said to be in a black SUV, did not stop after the collision and was reported to have dragged the victim’s bicycle for several blocks.
"The HCSO vehicular crimes division is working in concert with the district attorney’s vehicular crimes unit to investigate and prosecute this crime," Capt. Marcus Kinnard-Bing with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told OnScene reporters. Their investigation remains open and active, with deputies canvassing the area and seeking surveillance footage from nearby homes that may have captured the incident.
Meanwhile, detectives managed to recover the bicycle at Greenhouse and Keith Harrow, just half a mile from the crash scene. The child's activities prior to the incident are unclear, as is whether he was under adult supervision at the time of the tragic accident. "It’s unclear what the child was doing out at the time or if he was being supervised by an adult," according to a report by Click2Houston.
Authorities are now scrutinizing nearby surveillance footage which may provide evidence of the driver dislodging the bicycle from the SUV. As the community reckons with the tragedy, the driver responsible for the boy's death faces charges for failing to stop and render aid. The search for the hit-and-run driver continues as law enforcement urges anyone with information to come forward.
