On June 28, an altercation erupted outside Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center leading to shots being fired by a Clackamas County deputy. The deputy, Steven Tucker, engaged 25-year-old Joseph Brasuell after Brasuell allegedly rammed multiple patrol cars with a stolen vehicle, according to the Clackamas County District Attorney. Multiple local news reports, including KOIN, confirmed this information.

Officials stated that the Portland Police Bureau had begun tracking the suspect vehicle, identified as a white Kia Sportage before crossing into Clackamas County and entering the hospital's parking structure. To apprehend Brasuell, a confrontation ensued which resulted in Deputy Tucker discharging his weapon and wounding the suspect. The incident enforced a lockdown at the medical center, however, it was reported that no members of law enforcement or other individuals, were hurt.

Following the shooting, it was disclosed that Brasuell was taken to the hospital in serious condition, as noted by a statement obtained by KATU. Additionally, information provided by OregonLive indicated that two other occupants were present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, both of whom remained unharmed.

Brasuell, whom the DA’s office has confirmed had prior felony warrants for theft, failure to perform the duties of a driver, and eluding police, remains hospitalized. Deputy Tucker, meanwhile, has been placed on paid administrative leave as per policy. An upcoming presentation to the Clackamas County Grand Jury will aim to determine the justification for Tucker's use of force during the incident.
