A stretch of state highway in Clarksville, Tennessee, has been officially renamed to honor the city's former mayor, Don Trotter. The section of State Highway 374, now called "Mayor Don Trotter Highway," extends from Memorial Drive to Ted Crozier, Sr., Boulevard. This gesture recognizes Trotter's impactful tenure in the city's history, having led as mayor for a notable 16 years, during times spanning from 1987 to 1998 and then from 2003 to 2006.
The City of Clarksville announcement highlighted the recent Highway Dedication Ceremony where Trotter was present to see the fruits of his legacy formally enshrined. As part of the festivities, the former mayor accepted the dedication, graciously sharing the credit of his achievements with his supporters, the legislative delegation, and city officials. The city's current mayor, Joe Pitts, himself a former Chief of Staff for Trotter, spoke at the event, emphasizing how Trotter's administration kick-started a new era of growth and was pivotal in shaping the modern prosperity of Clarksville.
House Resolution No. 104, passed by the 113th Tennessee General Assembly, facilitated the naming of the highway. The resolution formally credits Trotter for establishing the River District Commission, an initiative that was instrumental in developing Clarksville's riverfront. Trotter, according to the resolution, epitomizes a public servant of "the highest order" and one whose "remarkable success as a public servant and civic leader is directly attributable to his reliance on the time-honored values of hard work and common sense and his uncommon ability to work well with people from all walks of life."
The highway naming also serves as a personal tribute to Trotter's family, signifying an enduring token of his service to the Clarksville community. In his remarks, Trotter expressed his gratitude for the permanent landmark in a city he dedicated much of his life to serving. Celebrating the occasion, several state and city officials, department heads, and Trotter's family members were in attendance to witness the dedication.
