The legal field has recognized one of its diligent servants with the 2024 Appellate Prosecutor – Felony of the Year award, and it's Cochise County Deputy Attorney Michael Powell who's taking home the honor. The accolade, which is a nod from the Arizona Prosecuting Attorney’s Advisory Council (APAAC), isn't one usually seen in the hands of someone from a smaller jurisdiction. According to a press release from the Cochise County Attorney's Office, the award came as a result of Powell's above-and-beyond work on an appeal that seemed to reach beyond county lines.
When Santa Cruz County hit an appellate snag on a critical evidentiary issue, dealing with the narrow and thorny paths of marital privilege in criminal cases, Powell didn't just offer a helping hand, he took the helm. His submission of an amicus brief to the Court of Appeals paid off, with the court delivering a published opinion that now stands as a beacon of clarity for the legal community. The impact, as it seems, resonates far and wide, reinforcing the steel frame of justice not only in Cochise County but beyond.
Brian M. McIntyre, Cochise County Attorney, couldn't hold back his pride. "We are immensely proud of Michael's achievements," he said. "The entire County can be proud to have such an amazing professional working daily to ensure justice in this County and even beyond. Congratulations DCA Michael Powell!" The office was vocal in their praise, making it clear that Powell's dedication is a boon not just for them but for the collective pursuit of fair jurisprudence.
A pat on the back isn't just for show here; it's a signifier that Powell represents what's right in the system. For him, justice isn't just a 9-to-5 gig, but a crusade that sometimes calls for stepping out of one's comfort zone, and into the complexities of legal precedents that affect the lives of many. And now, as his office celebrates, and colleagues across the state nod in respect, Powell's work etches itself into the fabric of law, as a reminder of the weight of responsibility shouldered by those who serve the court and community.
