A somber recovery unfolded in Scottsdale's Vista del Camino Park after a man's body was recovered from a lake yesterday. The Scottsdale police and fire department were summoned to the park, near Hayden and McKellips roads, responding to distressing reports of a man who waded into the water and failed to resurface. Efforts by a bystander who leaped into the lake to aid him proved futile. The incident was confirmed by sources providing coverage, including FOX 10 Phoenix and 12News.
The deceased was later identified as 64-year-old Robert Botthof. Details surrounding how or why Botthof initially entered the water remain unclear. The alarming situation prompted the authorities to emphasize the dangers of swimming in these types of water bodies that are not designated for such recreational activities. Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio cautioned against swimming alone, highlighting the unsuitability and potential hazards of those specific lakes. "We always preach don’t swim alone. Especially don’t enter these types of lakes behind me. They’re not meant to swim in. They’re not very clean. There’s no reason to be out swimming in this lake," Capt. Folio stated in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix.
Fear and heartache befell the local community as the news circulated. According to the report by FOX 10 Phoenix, a local resident, Larry Clark voiced his distress upon learning of the tragedy. "I’m just wondering who it is. I know quite a few people out here and the cops just told me he’s a well-known person, so chances are I know who he is. Just another one gone," Clark said.
Following the recovery, officials have urged the public to refrain from going into small lakes and ponds, particularly during bouts of extreme heat, suggesting that locals refresh themselves in public restrooms instead. This cautionary stance comes amidst concerns for public safety in such environments.
