Local efforts paid off this week as a vigilant community member's tip led to the arrest of a man connected to a recent restaurant burglary in Northwest, the Metropolitan Police Department reports. In the early hours of July 25, the 3300 block of 14th Street witnessed an unfortunate event when a suspect, later recognized by a member of the community from MPD's crime bulletins, forcibly made his way into an establishment, taking with him a cash register. A second suspect followed suit, further stripping the establishment of its assets.
According to MPD's news release, the man, identified as 35-year-old Victor Thomas Newcity, with no fixed address, was charged with Burglary Second Degree following his arrest on Monday, July 29th. The arrest, occurring only four days after the incident, was a direct result of the community engagement coupled with the MPD's investigative efforts.
Despite the swift police action resulting in this arrest, the case remains open as investigators continue their pursuit of justice. A cash reward of up to $1,000 has been offered to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and indictment of any additional perpetrators involved in the crime.
The MPD actively encourages anyone with information related to the incident to step forward. Individuals are urged not to intervene, but rather call police at (202) 727-9099. Alternatively, tips can be securely sent through the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
