A house in Covington was engulfed by flames in the early hours of Friday after an explosion, believed to be caused by fireworks, rocked the 700 block of Best Street. As reported by Action News 5, the authorities responded immediately, guiding all occupants to safety, however, a woman and a child had to be transported to the hospital due to possible smoke inhalation.
The source of the fire is under suspicion as Collierville officials suggest fireworks might have ignited the blaze the resulting emergency incident was quickly brought under control by first responders. Meanwhile, the Covington Police are investigating several individuals in a red vehicle seen near the scene at the time, WREG reports. The officials are urging the community to step forward with any information by contacting the local police department at 901-475-1261.
According to Local Memphis, Covington Police Chief Donna Turner labeled the incident as non-accidental, indicating a veer away from the initial thoughts of it being a mere accident, as the timing of the explosive episode appears deliberate given her assertion that the car was not associated with the house that burned down. The home, now reduced to ashes, stood as a beacon of tragedy faced by the unfortunately affected family.
The investigation continues as the authorities piece together the events leading up to the fire, with the potential involvement of fireworks heightening the cause for public safety concerns surrounding such festivities.
