In the wake of the wildfires ravaging through Deschutes County, residents who are part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and have lost their food supplies are getting some relief. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) has pushed the deadline for these residents to request replacement benefits to July 25, 2024, as reported by ODHS.
ODHS's decision came after receiving federal approval to extend the usual 10-day replacement request period, a move aimed to assist those affected by the continued wildfires. In contrast, while grappling with the aftermath of the fires, households living outside Deschutes County must adhere to the standard rule and request their replacement benefits within the usual 10-day window.
To request replacement benefits, those impacted are required to provide a list of lost food items, articulate their replacement costs, and in certain cases may be required to submit evidence of the disaster that led to the destruction of their food. According to information provided by ODHS, the maximum replacement amount a household can receive is equivalent to one month's SNAP benefit.
ODHS aims to ensure that the process remains accessible to all eligible individuals. "Anyone who disposed of food bought with SNAP benefits that was destroyed due to a disaster can request replacement benefits for the cost of the lost food,” says an announcement from the department. Accessing this additional support can be critical for families trying to rebuild in the fire's wake. For those seeking food, navigational assistance is available..
