Unexpected monsoon storms wreaked havoc on Lake Pleasant last Sunday afternoon, with high winds and rain creating a tableau of chaos for boaters. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County had warned of severe thunderstorms potentially bringing wind gusts of 40-60+ mph, heavy rainfall with hail, and frequent lightning, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. Despite warnings, boaters found themselves in peril as the storm abruptly descended upon the area.
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, boats were forcefully tossed around and some were even capsized by the surging waves. Boat owner Michael Padilla recounted his ordeal, "As soon as we hooked up, the waves started crashing in, ripped my ropes, and I had to get new ropes. Thank God for the guys at Dillon’s." He went on to emphatically suggest wearing life vests, as many accidents at Lake Pleasant have happened because of their absence.
The tumult resulted in about a dozen boats sinking or becoming beached. Walter Pollard, witnessing the destruction, told 12News, "It was just chaos." Lake-guided wisdom to never underrate weather was proven true as even experienced boaters struggled to navigate the devastating conditions.
Echoing the chaos, Ave Satanas hastily moved to help when the storm struck, as detailed by FOX 10 Phoenix. "One minute I'm filming the storm and then see this boat tipping. Myself and four others ran to where the upside down boat was coasting further down in the water and we heard where a woman was screaming ‘help,'" she explained.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they had to rescue around 30 individuals, but fortunately, no injuries were reported, as per 12News.
