Memphis' LeMoyne-Owen College, a historic beacon in the realm of higher education and the city's sole Historically Black College and University (HBCU), has named Dr. Christopher B. Davis as its 14th President. The college board, bypassing a national search, has appointed Davis, who had been serving as interim since July 2023 following the departure of former president Dr. Vernell Bennett-Fairs.

Davis' tenure as interim president saw substantial progress, with the college undergoing a rebranding phase and expanding its athletic program, including the addition of men's volleyball. In addition to his interim role, Dr. Davis is known in the area for his long-standing service as senior pastor at St. Paul Baptist Church, and his past contributions to the community as a member of multiple local organizations. "As we look to the future, I will lead LeMoyne-Owen to the next level of growth and innovation," Davis stated, as per Local Memphis.

Davis, who has earned his credibility through years of involvement in education and leadership roles, has served on the LeMoyne-Owen College Board of Trustees for eight years. His extensive resume is enhanced by his work on the Whitehaven Economic Development Council, and his academic credentials include degrees from the University of Arkansas and Arkansas Baptist College, as well as a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from Anderson University. Davis' dedication extends to his congregation which, according to the Commercial Appeal, has grown substantially during his time as Pastor at St. Paul Baptist Church.

With this appointment, Davis aims to elevate LeMoyne-Owen's academic programs, bolster student support services, and tighten the college's community ties. Notably, enrollment is on an upward trajectory, with "a 30% increase in enrollment," and an anticipated "largest freshman class in the history of the institution this fall," as Davis enthusiastically revealed, as cited by Commercial Appeal. Echoing the sentiment of progression, newly elected board chair Vanecia Belser Kimbrow expressed optimism, remarking there is "undeniable freshness in the air about the future of LeMoyne-Owen College," according to the Commercial Appeal.
