Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) has announced Dr. Lori Phillips as the new executive director of the recently established Office of Partnerships and Development. Phillips, a seasoned leader within the MSCS, formerly held the position of Chief of Student, Family, and Community Affairs, where her efforts greatly contributed to the integration of the Community Schools Model at multiple schools. This model aims to envelop schools with a wealth of services and support to uplift the encompassing neighborhoods.
According to Local Memphis, MSCS Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins praised Dr. Phillips' appointment, stating, "Dr. Phillips' extensive experience and deep-rooted commitment to community engagement make her the ideal choice to lead our Office of Partnerships," Feagins envisions that under Phillips’ guidance, the district will forge stronger ties with the business community and crystallize a robust network of partnerships that will bolster the prospects of their students and families.
Dr. Phillips has deep ties to Memphis, having obtained her bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Mississippi Valley State University, followed by a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Memphis. Furthermore, her academic journey culminated with a doctorate in education with a concentration on adult leadership. Her ascent to this new role underscores MSCS’s commitment to internal development and strategic partnerships even as the district is realigning its staff and organizational structure.
In recent times, MSCS has been observed reconfiguring its leadership landscape. Among the changes, Jared Myracle was appointed director of literacy, and Michelle Stuart, a maintenance veteran at MSCS, was promoted to facility services officer. Additionally, Roderick Richmond now holds the title of transformation officer, while Janice Tankson steps in as the assistant superintendent of schools. As reported by The Commercial Appeal, these appointments come at a time when the district is grappling with budget cuts involving a slash in central office positions, which effectively juxtaposes with the responsibility entrusted to Phillips in nurturing and developing strategic educational partnerships.
