Tragedy struck the "Duel on the Brazos" drag boat event in Waco when a high-speed crash claimed the life of a driver on Sunday. According to KXAN, the fatal incident occurred as a boat, reaching speeds of 200 miles per hour, "caught air" and began to flip, resulting in the driver being ejected into the waters of the Brazos River. Despite efforts by medical teams who retrieved the driver in less than a minute, the individual was unresponsive and ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the accident, the identity of the driver, who police confirmed was not a local from Waco, has been withheld pending notification of next of kin. Whose boat flipped on the Brazos River, the event posed serious risks inherent in the sport of drag boat racing, highlighting the danger these racers face each time they skim the water's surface at neck-breaking speeds. As reported by KCEN-TV, the driver was participating in a race organized by the Southern Drag Boat Association when the crash occurred around 1:20 p.m.
Responding to the incident, Waco Fire Department Executive Deputy Chief Robbie Bergerson remarked on the absence of the department's Water Rescue and Dive Team at the racing event, noting that "an engine company was sent to assist ambulance personnel with patient care after the driver was removed from the water," as stated by KXAN. His reasons for not having the specialized team on standby during such a high-risk event remain unspecified.
