In Eagan, the city’s lacework of parks is now interwoven with the thread of life-saving technology. Eagan public safety and parks teams, reacting to solid community input, have methodically installed automatic external defibrillator (AED) devices in 16 local parks, with 13 installations in the busiest hubs to ensure they're readily accessible in case of cardiac emergencies.
The strategic placement of these devices could mean the difference between life and death, expanding the safety net within Eagan’s recreational spaces, Jake McPherson, a fire captain for the Eagan Fire Department and an avid supporter of the initiative, has emphasized the significance of these machines, "Having AEDs in our public spaces is extremely important, if someone’s heart suddenly stops, giving them CPR right away and using a defibrillator quickly can help them survive," McPherson told the City of Eagan's website, highlighting the critical nature of the devices in saving lives.
Remarkably straightforward, each of Eagan's new AED units comes with user-friendly instructions, enabling immediate assistance by anyone, medical background or not however, the pragmatic approach to emergencies also includes a step to call 911, at which point, the dispatcher can aid by sending professional help and provide access to the secured AED cabinet.
The community response has been positive, with the sense of safety palpably heightened among parkgoers—one Quarry Park pickleball player with a heart condition mentioned, "I have an irregular heartbeat, so just knowing there’s an AED device at the pickleball courts makes me feel safer," a sentiment that underscores how vital this move is for individuals who might be at higher risk of cardiac incidents, and Parks and Recreation Director Andrew Pimental stated, “The AEDs in Eagan parks symbolize our dedication to listening to the community,” he says, “and ensuring park amenities are provided in the safest way possible."
