
The El Rio community is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic event that left one young man dead. According to a Hoodline report, the fatal shooting took place in the early hours of Sunday morning. Ventura County Sheriff's Office deputies discovered the 23-year-old victim with a gunshot wound at around 2:55 A.M. on the 1000-block of Collins Street.
In an attempt to save the man's life, deputies rendered emergency first-aid before he was transported to a local hospital. Despite these efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office has withheld the identity of the deceased, prioritizing the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the shooting. In response to the need for answers, the Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau has initiated a rigorous investigation, appealing for witnesses to provide any pertinent information.
A subsequent press release from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, obtained by Nixle, revealed that Alexis Bustillos has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Bustillos faces charges including assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and after further review by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, murder.
The report indicates a physical altercation involving Bustillos, the deceased Anthony Leyva, and another adult male preceded the shooting. During the conflict, Bustillos allegedly used the firearm, which resulted in Leyva's fatal injury. Bustillos's bail is currently set at $1,000,000, and he remains in custody at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility.
