Emory Smyrna Hospital, a healthcare institution that's been grappling with operational challenges, is set to shut its doors permanently by the end of December. Citing the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and several other challenges that have thwarted renovation plans, Emory Healthcare has decided to call it quits on this facility. Originally, renovations were intended to revamp the space, but now, after years of delays, the curtains will close on the South Cobb Drive hospital, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Services at Emory Smyrna Hospital, which were not full-throttled to begin with, mostly catered to outpatient radiology and walk-in care, according to the hospital officials. After the shutdown, patients in need of these services will be navigating the change by calling 855-781-0580 to access their medical records. During the announcement, made with good intentions though it was, the healthcare provider emphasized its shift in focus toward expanding inpatient orthopaedic surgery at Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital in Tucker, with plans to accommodate more patients there following a recent expansion.
Moreover, Emory Healthcare assured that while one door is closing, others remain open. WSB-TV noted the continued operation of several other Emory services in the Smyrna area, including Emory Heart & Vascular Center at Belmont, Emory at Belmont Primary Care, Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center Smyrna, and the Smyrna Urgent Clinic, all poised to continue serving the community's healthcare needs.
Despite the imminent closure, Emory is not subtracting but adding to their suite of services. This fall, the healthcare system plans to unveil additional operating rooms, enhancing their capability to treat a larger patient volume. Emory Healthcare made expanding its other services a priority, articulated in the strategy to ramp up offerings at their specialized Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital.
