Phoenix has named a new leader for its library system, choosing Erin MacFarlane as the next Library Services Director, a role she will assume starting July 29. The announcement was made early Tuesday by City Manager Jeff Barton, following what was described as a "competitive nationwide recruitment process."

MacFarlane, whose resume includes 26 years in education and library services, is not new to Phoenix. Having begun her career at the Phoenix Public Library in 2006, she's since climbed the ranks, recently holding the position of Deputy Director at the Maricopa County Library District. During her last role, she notably increased library access through the introduction of online programs, digital registration for library cards, and curbside pickup for materials, according to the City of Phoenix.

Erin MacFarlane, succeeding Rita Hamilton who retired last April after a 13-year tenure, comes prepared with an undergraduate degree in education and a master's degree in library and information science from the University of Arizona. In the period leading up to MacFarlane's takeover, the city relied on Mitch Menchaca, the City’s Arts and Culture Director, to fill in as Interim City Librarian, as per the City of Phoenix. MacFarlane's appointment seems a testament to her consistent advocacy and the search for someone who could further the library's reach and modernization.
