
An escaped inmate has been arrested following a fatal stabbing incident on the Atlanta BeltLine. The Atlanta Police Department responded to a scene at 243 Montgomery Ferry Road NE past 8 p.m. on a Friday night, where they found a man with fatal stab wounds, as reported by Atlanta News First. According to authorities, William Coleman, 27, is the suspect detained in connection with the murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.
The incident began unfolding when locals in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood discovered the body. Coleman was identified and later detained, the police further shared that he had been wanted by the Georgia Department Department of Corrections for an escape. Corrections records, as per FOX 5, indicate Coleman's prison sentence since October 2021 on various charges, including robbery and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He had been housed at the Atlanta Transitional Center, merely two miles south of the crime scene.
Residents have expressed their surprise and concerns, noting the BeltLine is frequently populated with families and individuals engaging in leisure activities. “This place is pretty crowded during the day, and obviously you see a lot of families watching their dogs and their children and all of that. So far, we’ve always felt really safe around here,” said local resident Anu Radhakrishan to Atlanta News First. Tadzia Toote, another concerned citizen, stated, "Definitely it’s something that’s really scary, especially inside this area." Further investigation revealed that both the suspect and the victim were homeless individuals. BeltLine officials are actively reviewing security footage to thoroughly understand the events leading up to the incident. The statement released by BeltLine officials declares, "The safety and well-being of our community are of utmost importance to the BeltLine, and our thoughts are with those affected by this event."
Meanwhile, members of the community are calling for increased police presence, with residents recalling recent disturbances and aggressive behavior in the otherwise serene neighborhood. "It seems like there’s been an uptick in aggressive behavior by people," Thomas Markovic reported to FOX 5. The investigation is ongoing, and the Atlanta Police Department urges anyone with information regarding the stabbing to come forward and assist.
