Residents of El Dorado County can breathe a sigh of relief as evacuation orders have been lifted following a fire that sparked concerns on Saturday afternoon. CBS News reported that the Creek Fire, located near Greenwood and just off Highway 193, saw its forward momentum halted by firefighting efforts.
According to KCRA, the fire originated at a residence on the 2700 block of Coon Creek Road and quickly spread to surrounding vegetation. Despite encountering low humidity levels which posed a challenge, firefighters have successfully contained 10% of a fire, which at its peak had affected over 15 acres of land.
Cal Fire stated that both ground and air resources were deployed to combat the blaze, bringing it to a slow rate of spread by late afternoon. Roads that were once barred to the public, including Highway 193 from Main Street to Penobscot Road, were reopened at approximately 6:30 p.m. after previously serving as avenues for the evacuees to escape the impending threat.
As the community begins its return to normalcy, public utilities are being restored. At the height of the power shutdown, nearly 800 customers from Greenwood to Georgetown found themselves without electricity as a precautionary measure taken by PG&E. However, as detailed by KCRA, that number had dropped to 67 by 5 p.m. Sunday. These measures, while inconvenient, were crucial in preventing further incidents as the crews worked to contain the blaze.
