Mud-caked runners waded through the Cosumnes River and hauled sandbags across pastureland this weekend as the 2026 NorCal Spartan Event Weekend took over Mahon Ranch, a working cattle ranch in south Sacramento County. The two-day obstacle race weekend, held Saturday and Sunday, drew competitors to a 5-kilometer Sprint with 20 obstacles, a 10-kilometer Super with 25 obstacles, and Kids Races spanning 1 to 3 kilometers.
According to CBS News, the event was billed as an action-packed obstacle race featuring rolling trails and river crossings, giving Sacramento-area participants a rare chance to test themselves on genuine ranchland rather than a manufactured course. The terrain came courtesy of Spartan Race, which built its Sprint and Super routes through oak woodlands, blackberry-lined trails, open pasture, and cold crossings of the Cosumnes River running through the property.
A 500-Acre Working Ranch Turned Race Course
Mahon Ranch itself predates the race by more than a century. The 500-acre property was established in 1882 by John Mahon and remains a working cattle ranch today, bisected by the Cosumnes River, according to Mahon Ranch. That combination of pasture, river, and oak cover gave Spartan's course designers natural obstacles that a purpose-built venue could not replicate.
Runners on the Super course faced signature Spartan challenges along the way, including the Spear Throw, Fire Jump, Atlas Carry, Barbed Wire Crawl, and the A-Frame Cargo net climb, per the race's own event materials. Competitors who complete a Sprint and a Super, along with a Beast or Ultra distance, within the same calendar year earn Spartan's Trifecta medal, a multi-race achievement system designed to keep athletes coming back for more events throughout the season.
Rule Changes and New Categories for 2026
This year's event also reflects broader shifts in how Spartan structures its competitive heats. Starting with the 2023 season, the organization replaced its longtime mandatory 30-burpee penalty for failed obstacles with a 200-meter penalty loop for competitive Elite and Age Group waves, a change aimed at speeding up race flow. For 2026, Spartan additionally rolled out a new Spartan Doubles category, letting pairs of participants run the course together and help each other clear obstacles rather than compete solo.
The Elk Grove weekend is a small slice of a much larger operation. Spartan reported 1.45 million total finishers across 658 races in 25 countries during 2025, with competitors clearing a combined 15 million obstacles worldwide, according to a December 2025 season summary. The company traces its roots to 2010, when former Wall Street trader Joe De Sena launched the first Spartan event at the Catamount Outdoor Center in Williston, Vermont, with roughly 500 competitors, per Wikipedia.
A Growing Industry Behind the Mud and Obstacles
That growth has translated into real money. An industry market report published in 2025 valued the global Spartan Race market at $420 million, with forecasts projecting growth to $730 million by 2033, according to Future Data Stats. For Mahon Ranch and Elk Grove, the weekend meant a temporary transformation of quiet cattle country into a staging ground for one of obstacle racing's fastest-growing franchises, before the ranch presumably returns to its usual business of running cattle along the Cosumnes.
