Yesterday in Falmouth, a display of human carelessness emerged through the form of unexploded fireworks on a beach, prompting a response from local officials. CapeCod.com reported that the Falmouth Fire-Rescue was alerted to the situation after a civilian, who initially discovered the commercial-grade fireworks, brought them up the beach to the main entrance.
Identified as a 5”-6” shell, one of the explosives had been submerged in water before its recovery. The area was promptly secured, while information from a resident led to a comprehensive sweep of the area, revealing a second, slightly smaller unexploded device. "These devices pose a significant hazard, so anyone who encounters one should stay away and call 9-1-1," a spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal’s office explained, as brought to attention by Boston 25.
The Massachusetts State Police's bomb techs in coordination with the Falmouth Fire Department facilitated the careful removal of these items. The unexploded fireworks were later disposed of safely at the Town Compost Facility on Blacksmith Shop Rd, after the town’s mass alerting system had communicated the situation to Falmouth residents via a RAVE message.
Officials have emphasized the gravity of finding such potentially volatile remnants, urging the public to exercise caution. If confronted with such fireworks or devices, it is crucial to leave them untouched, calling 911 to report the location and waiting for authorities to handle the situation, as reiterated by CapeCod.com.
