Early this morning, Farmington Hills residents were jolted awake by the blare of working smoke alarms as a house fire erupted due to a suspected dryer malfunction. The blaze began around 3:30 a.m. in a two-story home in the Preserves at Meadowbrook subdivision. According to Farmington Hills Fire Marshal Jason Baloga, as per WWJ Newsradio, "They did have working smoke alarms, and that’s a very good thing. We want to promote that, and that’s probably why they were able to get out safely."
In addition to the family’s escape, one of the residents self-transported to the hospital with minor injuries. A first responder also sustained injuries during the firefighting efforts. The Farmington Hills Fire Department said, as cited by WXYZ that a firefighter was transported to the hospital but is expected to recover fully. Meanwhile, the fire crews managed to contain the fire swiftly, preventing it from spreading to adjacent homes.
All residents in the afflicted home were able to safely exit the structure, thanks to the early warning from smoke detectors. Authorities at the scene treated one occupant for injuries, while the firefighter's injuries were addressed at a hospital and subsequently released.
While the fire was intense enough to inflict significant damage to the residents and partially melt the siding of a neighboring house, officials are still investigating to determine the precise cause of the fire. Farmington Hills fire officials are focusing on a dryer fire as a likely culprit. Baloga emphasized the critical role of fire alarms in such incidents, telling WXYZ, "The most important thing again is working fire alarms. Call the fire department as soon as you get out of the home, that way we can get to the scene quickly and extinguish the flames."
