In the early hours of a Sunday morning, a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 35 in San Marcos resulted in one fatality and several injuries, KVUE reports. The crash, which occurred near Exit 208, involved a black SUV carrying five passengers and a white Toyota minivan, leading to the SUV rolling over and crashing into the exit sign.
The black SUV, en route from Mexico to Irving, Texas, was broadsided by the minivan around 5:40 a.m., causing the driver to be ejected from their seat. The victim was later pronounced dead at Ascension Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle, the San Marcos Police Department provided the details of the accident and the aftermath. The ensuing chaos saw four other passengers nursing non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the disruption caused all three lanes of the interstate to close, prompting authorities to advise drivers to exit at 207 to avoid complications.
An off-duty state trooper who witnessed the crash reportedly saw the driver of the minivan flee the scene. The minivan came to a stop only after hitting a dumpster near an apartment complex along FM 110. The suspect then continued the escape on foot, as described by the off-duty officer, a statement confirmed by the San Marcos Police Department's Facebook page.
Authorities have since identified the suspect, and arrest warrants are in the process of being secured. The San Marcos Police Department, piecing together the testimony from the off-duty trooper and evidence gathered from the scene, has not yet released the identity of the alleged hit-and-run driver. Travelers on I-35 were advised to anticipate delays as the investigation unfolded and the debris from the tragic incident was cleared.
