A Newton County community is grappling with tragedy after a father was arrested for the shooting death of his son during a local fishing tournament. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Wayne Eaton now faces charges of malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, following an altercation that left his son, Troy Eaton, dead at a beloved family-run fishing spot in Covington.
Police were called to the scene around 7 p.m. on Friday, where they found the younger Eaton deceased within a building on the Lakeview Drive property. As reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, eyewitnesses and surveillance footage appear to confirm that Wayne Eaton shot his son inside a bait shop during the event attended by numerous local fishers. The motivation behind the shooting, however, continues to remain unclear as police delve further into their investigation.
Troy Eaton, a grandfather and avid fisherman, was a respected member of the Covington community. His family and friends paint a picture of a man deeply committed to his loved ones and to the community he served. "He would do anything for anybody. He wasn't a rich man, but if anyone needed anything from him, he would do what he could to help them out," Heather, Troy's daughter, recalled in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Fishing tournaments had been a staple at the Lakeview Drive property, which was once partly owned by Wayne Eaton until 2020 when ownership transferred to his son Troy, according to the Newton County Property Tax website. In a heart-wrenching post on Facebook, another of Troy's daughters, Tiffany Eaton Cartledge remarked, "Words cannot describe the pain or how utterly heartbroken anyone is that ever knew him," and added, "I pray for the strength to be able to accept that God has such greater plans for you." Her comments were detailed in the report by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The incident has not only shaken a family to its core but also the wider community that knew Troy as a generous man who fostered a love for fishing and togetherness. Covington police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as they continue to piece together the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
