The FBI has disclosed the identity of a man fatally shot by law enforcement in an officer-involved incident within the Gila River Indian Community. Marcus Lewis, aged 28 and an enrolled member of the community, was killed on July 14, as confirmed by the FBI in a statement released on July 19. The circumstances that led to the shooting still remain unclear.
Details surrounding the shooting are currently sparse, as the FBI continues to investigate the exact sequence of events with an aim to thoroughly understand what transpired. According to a FOX 10 Phoenix report, once the FBI's investigation is completed, the findings will be forwarded to the U.S. Attorney's Office for potential charges. Investigators have yet to release to publicly disclose specific information such as the number of officers involved, the number of shots fired, civilian armament, or the nature of the call that officers were responding to at the time.
This incident comes on the heels of another deadly encounter that took place earlier in the area. In early June, a Gila River Police officer and a 23-year-old woman were fatally shot in the community. Following that incident, two individuals, including a juvenile, were arrested in connection to the deaths. The community has faced a trying time, contending with multiple police-involved shootings in this brief span.
As the FBI proceeds with its investigation into the latest shooting, there will likely be a close watch on the proceedings, given the gravity of recent events within the Gila River Indian Community. In line with a report by 12news, the FBI has stated, "Once our investigation is complete, we will forward the results to the US Attorney’s Office for a charging decision." Community members and advocates will likely continue to closely monitor the situation as it unfolds.
