Five teenagers grappled with the reality of gunshot wounds after a shooting broke out at a large party in Pontiac early Friday morning, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. The incident, which unraveled in the 300 block of South Jessie Street, saw deputies, Star EMS, and the Waterford Regional Fire Department responding to a call after midnight, as informed by ClickOnDetroit. A scuffle had escalated, and shots were fired into the gathering crowd, leaving five male teens with injuries to their arms and legs.
The victims, identified as three 14-year-old boys from Pontiac, one 15-year-old boy from Pontiac, and one 15-year-old boy from Auburn Hills, were swiftly attended to, with one receiving a tourniquet by deputies before being taken to the hospital, as reported by WWJ Newsradio. Their conditions have not been extensively disclosed but are believed to be non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, shell casings littered the scene, a testament to the chaos that had transpired, but no specific suspect information has been released.
Amid the distress, a 34-year-old man was apprehended for warrants unrelated to the shooting, sheriff officials conveyed. The man, allegedly the host of the party, was previously barred from organizing such an event, according to Mayor Tim Greimel’s statement quoted by The Oakland Press. His unauthorized event led to unintended consequences for the five teenagers who now confront a memory of the Fourth of July marred by violence.
"These children will now have a horrible memory of the Fourth of July because they were at an unauthorized party," bemoaned Councilwoman Melanie Rutherford in a statement obtained by The Oakland Press. She emphasized the need for safe places for youth to congregate, especially on celebratory days such as the Fourth of July. While the city authorities and community members grapple with the aftermath and contend with the reality of youth violence, a reward has been issued by Crime Stoppers, urging those with information to come forward.
Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for tips leading to an arrest, officials said, an initiative in pursuit of justice and a deterrent to future violence. Anonymous tips can be given by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
