A young woman was fatally shot yesterday evening at an apartment complex in Westland, and investigators say the male suspect ran from the scene on foot before he was later arrested. Officers responding to the Landing Apartments on Hunter Avenue found shell casings scattered outside the complex, but authorities have not released details on what led to the shooting.
The shooting happened at the Landing Apartments, located on Hunter Avenue near Central City Parkway and Warren Road, according to The Metro Detroit News. The outlet reports that an investigation is underway after the woman was killed, and that the alleged shooter fled on foot before being taken into custody sometime later. No information has been released about a motive or any relationship between the victim and the suspect.
A Shooting Steps From Westland's Civic Core
The location adds a striking wrinkle to the case: the Landing Apartments sit directly adjacent to the stretch of Central City Parkway that functions as Westland's primary municipal and retail corridor, according to Seniorhomes.com. That area houses Westland City Hall, the William P. Faust Public Library, and the city's emergency services, putting the shooting scene within close range of the very infrastructure meant to respond to it.
It is not the first violent crime to hit that corridor in recent memory. In December 2025, a volunteer bell ringer was killed in a shooting at a Kroger store on Ford Road along the same corridor, and the gunman was later charged with first-degree murder, per the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. In April 2024, a high-speed police pursuit ended there when stolen-vehicle suspects crashed into apartment garages and nearly struck an officer, leading to six juveniles being detained, according to a Westland Police Department account shared on Facebook. One of those juveniles was reportedly wanted by authorities in Newark, New Jersey, in connection with a separate shooting.
Westland has also seen other serious violence in the past two years. In March 2024, officers forced entry into a duplex on Deerfield Court after receiving reports of multiple gunshots and found two people dead and one wounded in what investigators described as a domestic double homicide-suicide, per FOX 2 Detroit.
