Miami has seen its share of troubles in the health sector, but the case of Emmanuel Valentin, a former registered nurse with a self-confessed opioid addiction, brings a particularly distressing twist as he was caught replacing fentanyl with saline at two local hospitals. As reported by The Miami Herald, Valentin has lost his positions at both Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, and he surrendered his nursing license on June 26, prior to the Florida Board of Nursing's intervention.

Valentin's issues came to light during a pharmacy audit on March 22, 2023 at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was found removing an excessive number of fentanyl syringes, raising flags about potential misuse, according to documents from the Florida Department of Health and Valentin did not dispute these findings when he was discovered using a water bag to falsify a drug screening. Furthermore, The Hastings Tribune revealed that after his dismissal from Mount Sinai Medical Center he was advised to enroll in the Intervention Project for Nurses, which he neglected to do before taking on another nursing role at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital; it was here where his tampering with medications was caught on camera.

His illicit activities surfaced when on August 17, video evidence from HCA Florida Kendall Hospital showed him manipulating medication vials "by removing the caps from the medication vials," as per The Miami Herald and replacing the potent drugs with saline, which he then returned to the dispensing machine; these actions prompted an internal hospital investigation and subsequent criminal charges filed on August 25. Valentin admitted to the allegations during the course of the hospital's inquiries.

Following his guilty plea, Valentin has come under a three-year probation ending May 15, 2027; he faces one count of theft of a controlled substance and four counts of controlled substance possession, detailing his profound struggles with addiction and the resulting breach of trust within the medical community. With the forfeiture of his nursing license, Valentin's career in healthcare officially winds down, leaving behind a wake of serious concerns about the vulnerability of medical institutions to the perils of substance abuse by their staff.
