The sirens and the shining lights of Fort Lauderdale were not signaling an emergency but a grandiose celebration, one that honored a centenarian with a storied past. Thomas Dowdy Jr., a World War II veteran and longstanding community member, observed his 100th trip around the sun surrounded by friends, family, local dignitaries, and first responders.
On Wednesday, the day was marked with a special parade featuring the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and Fire Rescue, who joined the revelry out of respect for Dowdy's deep-rooted presence in the neighborhood since 1951. According to WSVN, the celebration brought together not just professionals in uniform, but also local politicians, and the hearts of many more whom Dowdy's life had touched.
"Have the best birthday ever," a firefighter was reported saying, capturing the sentiment of the community on Dowdy's landmark birthday. The centenarian, touched by the gesture, expressed his gratitude for the turnout. "Happy birthday to me. I really appreciate it," Dowdy said. His daughter, Loretta Shorter, described the anticipation building over the last two years as her father aimed for his 100th birthday. "We have been thriving for it, to make it to 100. He made it, and he's going to make it as far as God allows him." she told WSVN.
Following a life of service — drafted at age 18 before embarking on a 42-year career at Winn-Dixie — Dowdy's longevity and contribution to American liberty did not go unrecognized by municipal leaders either. Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Pam Beasley-Pittman talked about Dowdy's service, "At the age of 18, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and to have him here, to be able to share the history, to share how he has contributed to our country for our liberty and our safety, I am truly blessed, and this community is blessed," she shared, as per WSVN.
When asked about his secret to such a long life, Dowdy shared it was "all about eating." He maintained a sense of humor about his century-long journey, "I hope y'all get to be 100 years old and in good enough shape and sit down and eat a decent enough meal," Dowdy quipped according to Local 10 News. The family indicated that following the parade, the plan was to do exactly that, indulge in a feast, something Dowdy loves immensely.
